Hyperlinks

The links to your website are important for two reasons, links to your website are used to determine it's 'importance ranking' and the text surronding the link is used by search engines to determine what your website is about.

Every website on the internet is given a 'importance ranking' by search engines, this ranking depends on the number of sites that link to your site.

If a website links to your website then your website's weighting is increased, but every web page only has so much to give and the weighting is shared out between all the sites it links to. Think of it like using a magnifying glass, it is most effective when used to focus all light at one spot, but this takes some of the light away from other spots. A hyperlink on a page is like focusing a magnifying glass, focusing all links to a particular page instead of having an ambient, low-level ranking of a large number of pages, the more focused the links are the higher the rating of the page.

The more 'importance' a site has, the more 'importance' it provides to the pages it links to. One link from the lycos home page would be worth a thousand links from little websites.

Internal Links

The internal links of your site count towards your ranking, make sure that every internal link is optimised with the key words of the web page that it links to.

A lot of sites have links back to their home page with the text 'home', this is not effective, instead use a graphical image for 'home' and attach a description, 'alt' tag, to the image that contains your key words.

Directories

There are a lot of free directories on the internet that catolog websites into categories. The largest directory is dmoz. Most directories will provide a link to your site for free, although since directories link to so many sites it is not likely to increase your ranking much.

Some directories require you to link back to their site from your own, it is not recommended that you link to these sites. Linking to the directory site removes some of the 'rating' that would be passed on to the other sites your web page links to and will reduce your ranking in the long run.

If a directory requires you to pay to add a link to your own site it is worth checking the rating of the page your link would be placed on using the google toolbar, and considering the number of links already on the page.

Sharing Your Knowledge

The best way of increasing the ranking of your site is to get more people to link to it. If you share your knowledge and put useful information on your site then people are more likely to link to it. Hopefully links will be from relivant, related sites that have high quality content.

Friends

If you have friends with websites, are part of a group, or work cooperatively with similar companies try to get them to link to your site.

When you request that someone adds a link to your site send them an example of the link you would like that contains the key words that are important to your business.
